The experience of motherhood is many things. Predictable isn’t one of them.
My patients constantly tell me they had no idea what to expect emotionally when they became parents. Despite the proliferation of books, courses and apps to help new mothers prepare for every aspect of motherhood, the focus is often on how to care for the newborn. There’s no manual to teach a woman what to expect about the changes to her own psychological state when she becomes a mother. There’s no formula based on how you were mothered, and there’s no formula about how to do it well.
This is why so many women find themselves with a difficult learning curve when they give birth not only to their baby, but also to their new identity as a mother.
The goal of Conscious Motherhood Therapy is to resolve perinatal mood disorders and help women learn to navigate their own experience of becoming a new mother.
